Which song would you want Dylan to sing for Trump?

People on social media have been ‘asking’ what song would you ask Bob Dylan to play for Donald Trump as he spreads his mixed up confusion across America and the rest of the world!

Some have suggested It’s All Over Now Baby Blue – others the obvious Times They Are -A-Changin’ …

In fact Jimmy Fallon attacked The Donald with that at the Minneapolis’ Orpheum Theatre which was once owned by Dylan.

Fallon played guitar and harmonica as he sang Dylan’s 1964 rebel-rouser and tweaked the words to criticize Trump.Dylan himself used to set concerts on fire for decades as he roared ‘But even the president of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked’.

But is it Alrite Ma, what the grand Trump is doing to democracy?

Is he now standing naked before a Covid-world where he could have been a force for good, truth and honesty?

Instead even twitter warns people that his cyber ramblings could be fake news!

So, here is our vote for the song Dylan should sing for Donald – and the president should duck as the vitriol and invective of this video from 2003 at the Shepherds Bush Empire London, ruffles his feathers!

Here are the lyrics to Positively fourth Street … one of Dylan’s catalogue of ‘recrimination’ songs…

Positively 4th Street

You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you are my friend
When I was down you just stood there grinnin’
You’ve got a lotta nerve to say you got a helping hand to lend
You just want to be on the side that’s winnin’

You say I let you down, ya know its not like that
If you’re so hurt, why then don’t you show it?
You say you’ve lost your faith, but that’s not where its at
You have no faith to lose, and ya know it

I know the reason, that you talked behind my back
I used to be among the crowd you’re in with
Do you take me for such a fool, to think I’d make contact
With the one who tries to hide what he don’t know to begin with?

You see me on the street, you always act surprised
You say “how are you?”, “good luck”, but ya don’t mean it
When you know as well as me, you’d rather see me paralyzed
Why don’t you just come out once and scream it

No, I do not feel that good when I see the heartbreaks you embrace
If I was a master thief perhaps I’d rob them
And tho I know you’re dissatisfied with your position and your place
Don’t you understand, its not my problem?

I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is to see you

And he wouldn’t understand any criticism in the songs being about him. He unironically uses “Fortunate Son” at rallies after being a guy who got out of fighting in Vietnam because he was rich.

  2. Anthony Savage good point – but Dylan was – and still is to some extent – the major protest singer … and basically we’re just wondering what songs have an element of statement against trump
